Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California
Date Posted 10/23/2021
Admin-Tutors and Learning Resources
Employment Type
Application Deadline Open until filled

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division (ESDR) is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research in machine learning for chemistry/material science.

In this role, you will need to have the desire and imagination to drive the development of a hierarchical graph representation, incorporating experimental characterization of core-shell nanoparticles, in order to use knowledge graph machine learning to connect structure to photophysical properties.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct research in machine learning for chemistry/materials science.
  • Develop a graph representation to describe hierarchically structured systems, like core-shell nanoparticles, for use in machine learning.
  • Train graph convolutional neural networks and other graph-based machine learning models to predict properties from structure.
  • Build software infrastructure as necessary to interface with the experimental data pipeline and to facilitate rapid hyperparameter searches leveraging HPC resources.
  • Closely collaborate with experimental and computational team members on data preparation and analysis.
  • Propose experimental data to be generated that would strategically supplement and/or validate the machine learning model.
  • Prepare reports, research papers and presentations, and present results at meetings.

What is Required:

  • A recent Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field.
  • Experience with machine learning / statistical learning / deep learning.
  • Experience with knowledge graphs, graph representations, graph theory, or information theory.
  • Excellent object-oriented code development expertise.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work as an independent researcher and as a member of a diverse research team, collaborating toward goals, solving problems, and developing scientific ideas.

What We Prefer:

  • Experience with nanoparticle synthesis and/or photophysics.
  • Python programming experience.
  • Experience with collaborative software development via GitHub.
  • Demonstrated ability to support Principal Investigators in preparing proposals and project management.

For full consideration, please apply by November 15, 2021 with the following application materials:

  • Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume.

  • This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.  You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  • Salaries for postdoctoral positions depend on years of experience post-degree and are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Based on University of California Policy - SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program and U.S Federal Government requirements, Berkeley Lab requires that all members of our community obtain the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible. As a condition of employment at Berkeley Lab, all Covered Individuals must Participate in the COVID-19 Vaccination Program by providing proof of Full Vaccination or submitting a request for Exception or Deferral. Visit for more information.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Due to COVID-19, this position may initially be performed remotely but limited to individuals who can reside in the United States. Once the Lab resumes to full onsite operations, work may resume onsite at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
