The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position. The research fellow will be supervised by Prof. Abdon Pena-Francesch and will directly contribute to an active industry-sponsored project.
The position is available immediately and will remain open until it is filled. While the start date is flexible, the target is as soon as possible. The position will last at least one year, with the possibility of extension for subsequent years (depending on research outcomes and renewal from sponsor). The salary will be commensurate with experience according to NIH guidelines and university regulations.Mission Statement

The postdoctoral research fellow will develop cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) elastomeric nanocomposites. The research will involve the functionalization and dispersion of CNCs in polymer matrices for controlled composite morphology and controlled polymerization kinetics, as well as the comprehensive characterization of the structural, thermal, and mechanical properties of the materials. The research fellow will have direct access to state-of-the-art research facilities in the PI’s laboratory and through UM advanced instrumentation facilities (Michigan Center for Materials Characterization, BioInterfaces Institute, etc.). The research fellow will be part of a robust and growing research-active environment and engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research with researchers across the College of Engineering (including but not limited to MSE, MACRO, AERO, and Robotics) and the industrial sponsor R&D team. As part of a team, the postdoctoral research fellow will be involved in all aspects of research, including design and execution of experiments, data analysis, manuscript preparation, presentation of results, and mentoring.Required Qualifications*
A Ph.D. in materials science, polymer chemistry, soft matter physics, or a related field
Prior experience in nanocomposites
Prior experience in soft materials characterization
Strong publication record, good communication and interpersonal skills
Prior experience in cellulose nanocrystals and their composites
Prior experience in rubber chemistry
Prior experience in rheology
