Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as an Assistant  or Associate Professor of Chemistry beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year.
The candidate should be expert in the broad fields of Analytical/ Instrumental Chemistry. 
The successful candidate is expected to have extensive research and training background in the broad field of analytical/ instrumental chemistry, which may include but is not limited to the specialized field of analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, spectroscopy, separation science, chemical process/catalysis, analytical environmental chemistry, etc.
Expected duties for each position include teaching lower and upper level undergraduate and graduate chemistry courses, mentoring students in research, and establishing an active, innovative, and externally funded research program in the areas of Analytical Chemistry. In addition, the successful candidates are expected to participate in the development and delivery of an interdisciplinary Materials Science doctoral program in the near future.  
The Department of Chemistry is an American Chemical Society approved program and currently offers B.S. and M.S. degrees. The successful candidate is expected to be an active participant in departmental, college and university activities. The Department of Chemistry at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Chemistry beginning Fall 2022. This hiring initiative focuses on the area(s) of Analytical Chemistry/ Instrumental Chemistry. Candidates for this position are expected to strengthen and complement our research in catalysis, bio-analytical, nanoscience, and environmental chemistry. The selected finalist will establish independent research programs that successfully attract extramural funding, actively contribute to departmental development, and engage in innovative teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The position offers excellent start-up funds, salary, and laboratory space, and the department is well equipped with instrumentation (which includes the following major chemistry Instrumentation: Bruker Biospin 600 MHZ NMR, Perkin Elmer Optima 8300 Dv ICP-OES, Perkin Elmer Turbomass Mass Spectrometer, Thermo Scienitific  DSQ II GC-MS/ FID, a Clarius GC-FID, ThermoFisher Ultimate 2000 HPLC, Bruker D2 XRD, a MinifleX II XRD, 2 Perkin Elmer Lambda 950 UV-VIS NIR, 2 Perkin Elmer Frontier FTIR (with ATR, DRIFTS, and standard sampling attachments), Bruker FTIR, Quanta Chrom surface area porosity analyzer, Micrometrics ASAP 2020 surface area porosity analyzed, LS-10 SEM, hand-held RAMAN instrumentation Rigaku First Guard, Bay spec RAMAN spectrometers, Edinburg FLS 980, Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy EleXsys E-500-A console, among other instrumentation)  in a dynamic and highly interactive research environment.

About the Department:  The Department of Chemistry along with BCMB program is committed to quality education, community service, and preparing students for graduate work or careers in chemistry, as well as preparing students for admission to the schools of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.  The department has latest research facilities in chemical and biochemical research and education and is the home to approximately 30 full time faculty and about 400 graduate and undergraduate students. ACS accredited BS degrees are offered in Chemistry, along with graduate degrees at the master’s levels. The Department of Chemistry offers a Master of Science (Chemistry) degree, a Master of Science (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; jointly with Biology) degree, a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) degree, a Bachelor of Science degree with teaching certification, a minor in Chemistry, and a minor in Biochemistry. UTRGV is planning to launch in the near future an interdisciplinary PhD program in Materials Science and Engineering, on which the chemistry department will be a key participant.

Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or closely related field.

Evidence of ability and motivation to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate courses in her/his area of specialization. Evidence of ability and strong commitment to establish an innovative research program in the related field with postdoc experience and a good record of peer-reviewed publications.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. 
 
 The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
