What You Will Do

We seek a motivated candidate for a postdoctoral research position in applied statistics and machine learning. You will work in a program that supports fundamental, interdisciplinary research to advance detection capabilities for chemical agents. Specifically, you will work with a team that is developing and building a new capability for non-invasive detection of synthetic opioids using nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy.

In the twelve-month period between August 2019 and August 2020, 52,000 Americans died from synthetic opioid overdoses. Synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, cross the United States border daily at locations such as the JFK airport. Our team is developing technology to safely and rapidly screen packages specifically for the unique chemical signatures of fentanyl and its derivatives. We aim to leverage machine learning tools to aid in signal processing and target detection.

Main focus areas of the statistical and machine learning portion of the project include i) developing tools to denoise signals in a low signal-to-noise regime that poses challenges to existing signal processing techniques and ii) developing and testing cutting-edge deep learning-based signal detection and matching capabilities against standard techniques. Not only will this project offer publishing opportunities in statistics and machine learning methodology and applications, but it also offers the opportunity to contribute directly to a deployable detection capability for stemming the flow of synthetic opioids into the United States. Machine learning and statistics tools that you develop will likely benefit other detection modalities and applications, further increasing the real-world impact of your work.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated mastery of advanced statistical and machine learning methods, including, but not limited to, deep neural networks and probabilistic modeling.

  • Expertise with relevant software tools for deep learning (e.g., Python with Pytorch or Tensorflow, or equivalent).

  • Experience with collaborative, applied work in statistics and machine learning, including direct collaboration and interaction with subject matter experts.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills evidenced by a strong publication and presentation record.

  • Ability to obtain a Q-clearance. Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. A Q clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.

  • Enter minimum job requirements in this section. Do not copy bullets from Word.>

Education/Experience : PhD in Statistics, Machine Learning, or related field completed within the past five years, or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with signal processing techniques and analysis of temporal and spectral data.

  • Experience with GPU computing and HPC environments.

  • Background knowledge in chemistry and in measurement techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance or nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

  • Experience with statistical and machine learning tools applied to data obtained using the above measurement techniques.

Note to Applicants:

Position is available immediately. Ad will remain open until the position is filled. In addition to applying online, please send a CV, contact information for three references, a one-page statement of research interests, and a cover letter summarizing research and career goals to Natalie Klein ( neklein@lanl.gov ) with “ML for Opioid Detection Postdoc” as the subject line.

This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Vaccination Requirement :

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.

Where You Will Work
