Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) CE-Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Computer Systems Engineer to join the team.


In this exciting role, you will help develop the software infrastructure for the EcoSIM model as part of the deliverable for the newly funded Lab Directed Research & Development project “EcoSIM for BioEPIC”. BioEPIC is a long-term DOE funded project which includes a new state-of-the-art $50M research building on the LBNL campus. The goal of BioEPIC is to achieve a predictive understanding of complex environmental systems by integrating processes that span nanometers to 103 km and nanoseconds to centuries. EcoSIM is the software part of the BioEPIC. Thus, this position is an exciting opportunity for one to build a career. The initial appointment is two years, but may be extended for up to five years or converted to a career appointment based on continued performance and funding availability.


What You Will Do:

  • Develop codes and tools to address technical challenges for EcoSIM, including modularization, testing, and benchmark of EcoSIM.
  • Integrate EcoSIM with sophisticated reactive transport models.
  • Test the developed codes and tools on various computing platforms. 
  • Collaborate with scientists on the application of these codes, platforms, tools, etc.
  • Write technical notes/reports associated with the developed codes and tools.
  • Share technical results and information in team meetings and with collaborators.
  • Lead new developments if opportunities arise. 


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Help developing EcoSIM related research proposals.
  • Coach new users of EcoSIM.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (at minimum) in computer sciences, or engineering or science or equivalent combination of years and experience and a minimum of 2 years related experience.
  • Experience with Unix and Python, or Julia scripting.
  • Experience with modern practices of open collaborative software development, including code review, github pull request, etc. 
  • Extensive experience in releasing stable, well-tested, robust software systems of substantial complexity.
  • Ability to work with FORTRAN 77/90 and C/C++.
  • Ability to work with high performance computing systems.
  • Ability to work creatively and independently to address technical challenges in software development, which may include substantial changes to the current model structure. 
  • Knowledge of visualization and analysis software packages to facilitate software development.


Desired Qualifications:

  • B.S. with 5 years of experience or an M.S. with 3 years of experience in similar disciplines. 
  • Knowledge in plant/soil biogeochemistry or biogeophysics, numerical solution of partial differential equations.
  • Knowledge in reactive transport models.

  • This is a full-time, two year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
