Position Summary: Good Shepherd Food Bank is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced researcher to join its Public Policy & Research Team. The Research and Evaluation Manager leads projects that support data-informed strategic planning and decision making, developing and implementing research strategies to help the organization better understand the problem of hunger in Maine and evaluate its responses to this problem.

A successful candidate will have experience developing research methods, overseeing research initiatives, and preparing professional briefs and reports. The candidate will also have excellent written and oral communications skills and the ability to collaborate within our organization and with community partners. The Research & Evaluation Manager must be able to take initiative and execute work independently, while also collaborating with the Vice President of Public Policy & Research to identify research objectives and synthesize results.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities


  • Advance the organization’s own research, monitoring, evaluation, and learning work to inform strategy. Identify and develop research opportunities related to the goals and objectives of Good Shepherd Food Bank.
  • Assess the outcomes of the organization’s activities, and advise and support the leadership and executive teams in the monitoring & evaluation of activities.
  • Liaise with academic and research partners to support the quality of their work, and identify and undertake research to inform ongoing organizational and strategy development.
  • Manage complex stakeholder relationships. Collaborate with internal and external partners to plan, implement, report, and activate recommendations from research and evaluation projects.
  • Research and analyze existing and emerging trends in food insecurity and responses to combat the problem both in Maine and across the nation. Produce research briefs, including internal, public-facing, and academic/professional publications.
  • Provide data reports to inform internal and public presentations on the latest research on hunger in Maine, the region, and nationally as well as the charitable network response.
  • Provide behind-the-scenes support of strategic evaluations including research, drafting of associate policy and development support, and interdepartmental data analysis. Respond to ad-hoc research- and evaluation-related queries.
  • Manage Research & Evaluation Team, which consists of a Research Coordinator. May also include AmeriCorps VISTAs, academic interns, and other skilled volunteers.
  • Continue the work on existing research projects, including:
  • Service Insights Initiative: Oversee implementation of our Service Insights Initiative with partner agencies (executing rollout plans, ensuring technical assistance to partners, establish and execute all phases of planning, implementation, and evaluation).
  • Client Research: Develop, implement, and evaluate formal gathering data directly from the end recipients of GSFB’s services. Gather both quantitative and qualitative data on an ongoing basis from recipients at GSFB’s partner food pantries and meal sites. Continue to develop and implement tools that will be used to gather data (survey, focus group, etc). Oversee data collection, compilation, analysis, and final report production.
  • Mapping: Oversee mapping of Maine’s food insecurity rates on multiple levels for comparative analyses of GSFB’s services to determine gaps and emerging needs.

. Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience of applied social science research methodology required.
  • Relevant experience in any combination of economic or community development, public policy, nonprofit or think-tank position.
  • Applied research activity, policy analysis, organizational learning, program design or and/or evaluation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative design, data collection methodologies and analysis.
  • Experience with statistical analysis methods such as economic impact analysis, regression analysis, and/or GIS.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, influence others and offer strategic perspective.
  • Advanced critical thinking skills, exhibited by the ability to synthesize and summarize complex information from a range of sources in an accessible way.
  • Superior writing and oral communication skills.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow through on tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work as part of a team.
