Summary:
The Sr. EH&S Technician will perform a variety of duties involving inspections, sampling, removal, disposal and reporting of hazardous materials and waste, all while following environmentally responsible and cost-effective policies, practices and procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned
  • Schedule medical, biohazardous, and hazardous waste pick-ups for all Science Center Campus (SCC) sites and ensure waste is shipped out in a timely fashion.
  • Be responsible for the documentation (e.g., hazardous waste manifest and profiles), handling procedures, storage/recycling and disposal of medical, biohazardous, and hazardous wastes at all SCC sites.
  • Ensure sampling, manifesting, packaging, labeling and loading of all medical, biohazardous, and hazardous waste is accurate and adheres to state and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Perform hazard identification, risk assessment, safety, and environmental aspect analysis.
  • Support Industrial Hygiene monitoring for potential exposure. Review report and communicate results to effected personnel.
  • Assist in the development of all company operations concerning the fire, emergency, safety and environmental programs.
  • Assist in incident investigations, identify root causes, and ensure conformance. Provide an active role in the Safety Committee.
  • Decontaminate equipment and mold infected material when required.
  • Understand the process of work permits, risk work plan and Job safety analysis among other high-risk programs.
  • Coordinate wastewater and rain sampling per applicable federal, state, and local issued permits and requirements.
  • When necessary, train or mentor other environmental technicians and coordinate an individual technician or crew's work tasks.
  • Maintain the inventory and storage of hazardous materials in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, practices, and procedures including applicable reports. Maintain accurate data for Chemical Inventory in the buildings and the maintenance of Safety Data Sheet online library.
  • Perform the transfer of hazardous chemicals in the BCSD to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
  • Oversee the storage of hazardous waste and materials in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Oversee the retrieval of hazardous waste from various areas onsite.
  • Provide "Hands-on" support (as needed / requested) to help employees to meet safety requirements/obligations.
  • Promote a safe working environment for employees and monitor for safe working practices.
  • Ensure company compliance and appropriate reporting of hazardous materials inventory to outside agencies.
  • Coordinate company or consultant crew's activities during an incident response and clean-up.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This person has no direct supervisor responsibilities
Interaction:
The incumbent works closely with employees in all other functional areas.
Education and Experience:
  • 5+ years of relevant progressive environmental and safety experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates degree and / or EHS Certification preferred
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER certification required
  • Certified in DOT regulations required

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with a high degree of self-motivation
  • Strong english communications skills necessary to impart health and safety information
  • Ability to use Word and Excel software
  • Must be qualified to wear a respirator
  • Must be able to drive a forklift
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Must be able to effectively deal with individuals at all levels
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, move between spaces, reach with hands and arms and stoop. Close vision and the need to focus on computer screen, use of hands, fingers and wrist to type on keyboard and manipulate mouse. Will need to lift and move boxes that may weigh up to 50 pounds. Able to work in extreme conditions, i.e. hot, cold.
Work Environment:
Work will be inside and outside of building throughout the day at various locations. May be exposed to a wide range of waste streams and/or chemicals. Must be available to work different shifts, which will include weekends. Inside typical noise level is in moderation with consistent printer, telephone ringing, and conversation. Outside typical noise is typical of warehouse and facility equipment (e.g., forklifts, compressors, boilers, pumps).

The base pay range for this role in California is $26.15per hour to $35.96per hour This role is classified as non-exempt and eligible for over-time.
The range is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. The range considers a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: geographic markets, business or organizational needs, skill sets, experience, training, licensure, and certifications.
