Chicago State University (CSU), founded in 1867, is the oldest public university in the Chicago Metropolitan area. CSU is known for its impressive landscape, sitting on 161 wooded acres featuring large tracts of open space and beautiful trees. The campus is located near the recently-renovated CTA 95th Street station, as well as other transit systems that all provide commuter students, faculty and staff convenient access to the campus. The University’s five colleges—Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Pharmacy—offer various undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree-granting programs. The University also provides the greater South Side Chicago community with a multitude of athletic, cultural, educational and recreational activities.
Under the leadership of President Zaldwaynaka Scott, whose term began in July 2018, CSU has been committed to the processes of renewal and transformation, despite the challenges of limited institutional resources. The President’s student-centered vision focuses on the advancement of the outstanding academic programs currently in place, as well as the development of new, innovative, and relevant programs to meet the needs of employers of the twenty-first century. The Dean, reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, oversees the College of Education (COE) to enhance its visibility, effectiveness and impact. As chief academic officer of the college, the Dean is responsible for the academic, personnel, financial, and administrative affairs of the college. The Dean is also responsible for communicating the vision and goals of the College to community and professional constituencies and seeking public and private funds to support the goals of the college. Job Description

1. Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the strategic plan for COE.
2. Exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, fiscal, personnel and administrative affairs of COE.
3. Demonstrates awareness of current local, national and international trends and opportunities in education to advance the College.
4. Leads the faculty in governance, promoting a culture of excellence, ethics, service and continuous improvement.
5. Fosters a climate of research and innovation to impact educational outcomes in all levels of education (K-12, and post-secondary).
6. Leads recruitment and retention efforts of high caliber and diverse student populations.
7. Lead recruiting, hiring and retention efforts for highly qualified faculty and staff; comply with collective bargaining contracts.
8. Promotes professional development and innovation to ensure competence and effectiveness of College faculty, staff and graduates.
9. Directs national or state accreditation and certification, assessment and ongoing program development of academic programs.
10. Sustains productive working relationships with faculty, students, university administrators, alumni and the broader community on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects.
11. Leads effective fiscal management of public and private funding for the College and expanding alternative revenues to enhance the College.
12. Serve as the professional liaison with government and professional agencies and associations.
13. Demonstrates commitment to shared governance; commitment to innovation, inter-professional education and administrative flexibility; and a strong commitment to developing and sustaining community partnerships.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. or Ed.D from a regionally accredited institution, and have an excellent record of teaching, scholarship and service that merits tenure at the level of Professor at Chicago State University. The candidate should have at least five years of administrative experience in a university at the level of department chair or above. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:
a successful record of decision making, management, and administrative experience including setting priorities, managing diverse personnel and complex budgets;
b. an exemplary record of promoting scholarship and research;
c. experience in recruiting and retaining students, advancing student success, and building academic excellence;
d. excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess an outstanding record of leadership, advocacy, and community partnership.
e. experience with assessment and accreditation
f. teaching experience at the university level including experience teaching at the graduate level

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with urban, collective bargaining educational systems; demonstrates a collaborative and open communication and management style with an ability to build relationships within and beyond the College and possess enrollment management skills to achieve higher rates of retention and graduation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to articulate the College’s mission, goals, accomplishments, and needs to a broad range of external constituencies, including alumni, academic, government representatives, and business communities

Passion for facilitating the success of others, including faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders

Outstanding communication skills with strong interpersonal skills

Demonstrated ability to lead by consensus and with transparency

Experience in supporting and cultivating a distinguished, accomplished, and diverse faculty
